We have tested SyMAP V3.1 on:

  • Internet Explorer - no known problems

  • Firefox on Linux - no known problems

  • Firefox on Mac other than Version 10.5.8 and 10.6.3 - no problem

  • Firefox on Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 (Model Name iMac)
    • When viewing the 3D graphics, the image shows on other tabs.
    • Do not resize the window. It causes residual graphics, and the mouse coordinates are thown off so a click on a button no longer works.

  • Safari on Mac X Version 10.5.8 (Model Name iMac)
    • When opening another tab, the Java Applet is terminated and the SyMAP window goes blank.

  • Firefox and Safari on Mac OS X Version 10.6.3
    • The 3D graphics do not work. A blank window is shown. The dot plot and other views work fine.
To fix:There are duplicate j3d libraries under /System/Library/Java/Extensions which get loaded and cause failure. If you remove j3d*.jar and vecmath.jar from that directory, the 3D works.
Note: The Java program runs on your machine, which is why the fix needs to occur from your machine. As far as we can tell, this does not hurt any other Java application, and others using the 3D library have also had this problem. It appears to be a bug with this version of the Mac OS.
    • We have a very rare problem where the graphics gets out-of-sync, resulting in (1) partial displays or (2) selecting an object/button does not work as the coordinates are off; just go back to the main page (which exits the Java SyMAP applet) and then re-enter.
    • Occassionally, Java gets confused. If you get a "StackTrace", do the following: Go to your "Java preferences" (probably in the coffee cup in upper right corner); select Network; select Delete Files; re-start your browser. Java keeps security information, which appears to get mess-up; this cleans it out.
Java is running on your machine, so if it runs out of memory, you need to increase the allocation on your machine; see Not enough memory.

If you have problems not listed here, please let us know at symap@agcol.arizona.edu. As Java runs on your machine, it may be your system configuration, which we will help you trouble-shoot. If its a SyMAP bug, we definitely want to know so we can fix it.
